Gossip Web sites are abuzz with sightings of the newly single Evan Rachel Wood and Mickey Rourke, her much older costar in The Wrestler. But the actress - who split from rocker Marilyn Manson last month - wants the world to know that they’re just friends.
“Spread the word - I’m not dating Mickey Rourke,” Wood told PEOPLE at Sunday’s Hollywood Life 3rd annual Behind the Camera Awards in Hollywood. “Everybody thinks we’re dating and we’re not.”
That’s a sentiment the 21-year-old actress reiterated in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE: “Mickey and I bonded while shooting The Wrestler and we became friends, but nothing more. I guess, because of my recent break up, I will be linked to many people, but I am not interested in pursuing a relationship at this point in my life. Any such rumor should not be taken seriously.”
Rourke, 56, also denied the so-called romance. When asked Saturday if they two had begun dating, he told PEOPLE, “No, no. I’m a big fan of hers and she’s a big fan of mine.” (Although the costars - along with the rest of The Wrestler cast - were in Las Vegas Saturday, Wood did not join Rourke at Tao’s three-year anniversary party.)
It’s been a tough few days of rumor control for Wood, who, on Friday, also refuted gossip surrounding her breakup.
“Manson and I both decided to take some time apart so we could concentrate on work,” the actress told PEOPLE at the time, addressing stories that they’d fought bitterly about her brother. “Someone used that opportunity to kick us while we were down and sell a completely false story.”
On Sunday, Wood insisted she’s coping well with the split.
“It’s not the nasty thing everybody thinks it is. I’m doing fine, as best as can be expected …,” she said. “Right now, I’m just enjoying being on my own.”

Evan Rachel Wood is sick of the false reports circulating about why she and Marilyn Manson broke up.
“Manson and I both decided to take some time apart so we could concentrate on work. Someone used that opportunity to kick us while we were down and sell a completely false story,” the actress, 21, explains in a statement exclusively to PEOPLE.
Stories of the couple splitting in a bitter fight over Wood’s brother Ira, who had been living with the pair, getting kicked out of the guest house by Manson, 39, started popping up this week.
“If any more attacks are made on us, it is the act of a desperate, selfish person, who is angry to no longer be a part of my life. No further comment will be made and we request our privacy at this time.”
Manson and Wood began dating in December 2006.

Evan Rachel Wood sports it discreetly on her hip and Marilyn Manson’s is on his wrist, but the couple’s matching tattoos mean one thing: love.
Wood, 19, told PEOPLE about the couple’s matching body art Tuesday night at the Nicole Miller and Cinema Society screening of her new movie, The Life Before Her Eyes.
“It’s a lightning bolt for David Bowie. And it has a black valentine heart around it,” she said. “Marilyn has a black heart on his wrist and I have a black heart. We got them on Valentine’s Day.”
Wood still has a “J” tattooed on one ankle, and her old boyfriend, Jamie Bell, has a tattoo of an “E” leftover from their relationship. But she’s definitely moved on - and she’s glad she and her new beau can share pale complexions as well.
“I was always pale,” explained Wood. “And I’m glad that I can be open about my paleness now. Because everybody always darkened me up. Especially for this movie, because I had to match Uma %26#91;Thurman, who plays an older version of Wood’s character%26#93;.”
As for what makes Manson good boyfriend material, Wood said, “He’s very, very romantic. And there is nothing sexier than rock and roll.”
Evan Rachel Wood’s inspiration to make a sex video with her boyfriend, rocker Marilyn Manson, was to “show that it’s okay to have different, weird ideas about romance.”
“At the end of the video, we’re kissing and it’s raining blood - and for me, that was one of the most romantic moments of my entire life,” Wood, 19, says in the September issue of GQ magazine.
The music video for Mason’s song, “Heart-Shaped Glasses” - which Wood explains does not contain actual sex - caused quite a stir, but to hear the actress’s description, it’s artistic and sentimental.
“We made it for each other … Because that’s how we were feeling at the time: Even though ugliness can be all around you - you can literally be in a thunderstorm of blood - if you look past that, it really is just two people holding on to each other.
“And you know, the same thing with the sex scene. If you’re going to have a sex scene, that’s what it is,” Wood continues. “When you’re with someone and you’re in love, that’s usually what happens. It’s not always soft. Sometimes it’s somebody screaming or whatever.”
The self-described “shy, painfully shy” teen says that her “healthy, loving” relationship with Manson, 38, would surprise people - as would how loudly he snores, which, she says, in fact lulls her to sleep.
“For the first time,” she says, “I really feel like I’m around somebody and in an environment where I can just let go and not worry about being judged.
“And I’m sorry if I have blond hair and blue eyes and my boyfriend looks like a vampire. What do you want me to do about it?”
Wood has three films out this fall, including Across the Universe, in which she stars as a young woman caught up in the whirl of the anti-Vietnam War movement. The film is a kind of Beatles rock opera, and Wood even sings her own songs.
“I think it’s some of the most personal acting I’ve ever done,” she says, “because I’m more aware of myself now. Before, I didn’t realize how therapeutic acting was for me - how much of myself I was letting out.”
Asked to sum up boyfriend Marilyn Manson’s appeal in just one word, Evan Rachel Wood barely hesitates: “Eyeliner.”
“If you’ve ever dated me, then you would have ended up wearing eyeliner at some point,” she tells the British edition of Elle in its August issue. “All my boyfriends have.”
Makeup aside, Wood says the rocker - whom she calls simply “Manson” - is “lovely, really human and just amazing. It may surprise you just how healthy and loving our relationship is.”
“He’s crazy!” she says, laughing. “And crazy, by the way, is the highest compliment I pay. Manson is definitely crazy. Hopefully I am, too.”
Wood, 19, says she and Manson, 38, met at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, “both of us hiding in the corner of a party neither of us wanted to be at.”
She says they became “movie buddies,” until one night - after he separated from wife Dita Von Teese in December 2006 (Von Teese filed for divorce five days later) - “we just suddenly looked into one another’s eyes and knew.”
(Sources told PEOPLE in January that Manson’s relationship with Wood was a factor in Von Teese’s decision to file for divorce.)
Despite Manson’s hard-partying reputation, Wood says she herself is “hopeless at drinking.” Asked about drugs, she says: “I’m not saying I’m an angel, I just don’t have an addictive personality. Even today, with Manson, I’m happier staying home watching movies.”
She also gushes about her beau’s influence on her: “You should see his house, omigod, it’s a hurricane of creativity. And it’s making me feel more creative than ever before. I’m writing poetry, songs, taking photographs, experimenting with fashion, everything.”
Other things she’s learned from her relationship: “Just how cruel people can be. I’ve seen blogs where I’ve been called a slut, a whore, that say I should be condemned to death simply because I’ve fallen in love. Surely the fact that we are both prepared to go through all this proves just how important - and real - our love is, no? Everyone is so worried that I’m losing myself but really I’m finding myself. I’ve never been more comfortable in my own skin.”
Previously, Wood dated Billy Elliott actor Jamie Bell, whom she met at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. She has a ‘J’ tattooed in green on her left ankle - and for the record, yes, Bell wore eyeliner when he dated her. (”He looked great in mascara,” she says.)
Marilyn Manson split with wife Dita Von Teese late last year, but he’s already found a new soul mate, he says.
“I’ve found my double, my twin, with my new girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood,” the 38-year-old rocker tells France’s Le Parisien newspaper.
“She’s l9 and certainly that’s very young,” he added, “but that’s not a problem for me. She likes the same things as me. She understands I like to get up when night falls and go to sleep at dawn.”
A solo Manson was in Paris for three days to promote his upcoming sixth album, Eat Me, Drink Me, and he said depression and his ongoing divorce from Von Teese, 34, inspired the project.
“Our relationship ended at Halloween,” he tells the paper. “I was completely destroyed psychologically. I’d rented a house and begun working on this disc, which sort of tells everything that happened to me during the past year.”
Manson - whose real name Brian Warner - and Von Teese - née Heather Sweet - wed in December 2005, and sources told PEOPLE in January that Manson’s relationship with Wood was a factor in Von Teese’s decision to file for divorce on Dec. 29.
“I was married to someone who wanted me to change,” Manson says. “Become more adult, more responsible. I began not to like myself, not like what I do. I lost my identity. Everything began collapsing around me. The record allowed me to put an end to that. Dita left at Christmas while I was recording.”
According to his Web site, Manson first met Wood when he asked her to be in his upcoming horror film, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll. He tells Le Parisien the film, which he directed and which features Wood and British teen model Lily Cole sharing the role of Alice in Wonderland, will be out in October.
Von Teese, who cited “irreconcilable differences” in her filing, recently told PEOPLE she and Manson “are not friends … But we don’t hate each other or anything.”
