Jennifer Hudson and boyfriend, David Otunga, have gotten engaged, her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“I can confirm that Jennifer got engaged to her boyfriend David on Friday night in L.A.” says the rep.
Otunga, who is known as “Punk” from the reality show I Love New York 2, popped the question with a Neil Lane diamond ring on the Dreamgirls Oscar winner’s 27th birthday.
The couple, who have been dating less than a year, both hail from Chicago.
Professionally, it is a busy time for Hudson as well. Her debut solo album, Jennifer Hudson, will be in stores Sept. 30, and her next film, The Secret Life of Bees opens on Oct. 17.
Jennifer Hudson is not only appearing in the Sex and the City movie - but the Dreamgirls Oscar-winner is lending her vocals to the film’s soundtrack, as well. People.com has the official first listen of Hudson’s song “All Dressed in Love,” available May 27.
Listen to it here:
The energetic track showcases the former American Idol contestant’s powerful voice over horns, piano and string arrangements, which contribute to its disco-era feel. The song was written by MC Jack Splash and Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo Green.
The Sex and the City: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack also features a song by Fergie, who contributes the re-imagined theme song, and India.Arie, who covers Don Henley’s “Heart of the Matter,” which is streaming on the official SATC Web site.
“%26#91;Director%26#93; Michael %26#91;Patrick King%26#93; had a real instinct that first of all we needed to have a 20-year-old in this movie. We have to remember that there is a significant audience now because of syndication that has hooked into this show that are very, very young and it’s a great way of reminding people of who Carrie was when she first came to New York,” Parker explains on AMC’s Shootout, airing Sunday.
Parker also praises the casting of Hudson. “African-American women and women of color have been a big part of the audience for a long time. We really haven’t been responsible to them in a way and we haven’t given a woman of color an important and significant role and she is especially lovely in this movie,” she says. “She is steady and womanly and gorgeous.”
Sex and the City hits theaters on May 30.
With an Oscar and a Golden Globe trophy already on her shelf, Jennifer Hudson is aiming for the Triple Crown of awards: a Grammy in 2008.
“I used to watch the Grammys and dream of winning one,” she told PEOPLE at a New Year’s Eve event headlined by the Dreamgirls star in Miami. “Maybe that can be next on my list.”
Guests at the Setai paid up to $60,000 per table to dine on Peking duck salad and roasted tenderloin by the poolside. Actor Dylan McDermott posed for pictures with guests before taking the stage to introduce Hudson as “one of the most talented people on the planet.”
Wearing a bright red Donna Karan sleeveless dress and more than $150,000 in jewelry specially designed by Rosalina Lydster, Hudson, 26, received an enthusiastic welcome from the crowd as she sang hits from Dreamgirls as well as “Happy Place,” a song from her upcoming album.
Hudson, who also appears in the upcoming big-screen version of Sex and the City, adds: “I still don’t exactly believe everything that has happened to me. Every day, it’s like ‘Thank you God.’”
