With her relationship with Tony Romo approaching the one-year mark, Jessica Simpson is gaining some perspective on her life and loves.

“I’d always fall for guys I wanted to save,” the singer, 28, tells Cosmopolitan for its December issue (on sale Nov. 11). “For the first time, I fell in love with someone who saved me.”

As for where the road with Romo, also 28, may take her, Simpson says, “I think any person who I’m gonna date for longer than six months, I definitely am investing in something long-term. If I get married again, then it will be the last time.”

From 2002 to 2005, Simpson was married to Nick Lachey, who, she says, “will always be a part of my life, but next time, I’m marrying the right one.”

Time flies when you’re in love, Jessica Simpson has discovered.

Though her relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo only has been cooking since around last Thanksgiving, “It feels like forever,” Simpson, 27, tells Glamour magazine for its June issue. “I love this guy. Can you feel it?”

Crediting Romo, 28, with helping her rediscover her inner strength, “What he’s done for me is irreplaceable,” she says. “He reintroduced me to myself. I thought that I had to be deeper, more profound and more artsy. … Tony taught me that because he loves me %26#91;as me%26#93;. He made me feel comfortable %26#91;being myself%26#93; again.

She tells of meeting Romo after she heard on TV that he had a crush on her - and she thought he was “really cute.” They eventually flirted over e-mail and the phone, then set up their first date for Nov. 20, when her entire family went to see Romo play.

Their First Kiss

When they finally ended up in the hotel restaurant, “He goes like this across the table,” says Simpson, demonstrating how Romo puckered up. “I go, ‘What are you doing?’ He goes, ‘Nothing,’ and starts pouting. I said, ‘Were you just trying to kiss me in front of all these people?’ He goes, ‘Maybe.’ I’m like, ‘Try it again.’ ”

Looking back, she says, “The fact that this guy, on our first date, in the first 10 minutes of dinner, wanted to lean over the table and say, This is my girl and I want to kiss her - our first kiss in front of everybody - was awesome.”

Hours after guiding his Dallas Cowboys to a Thanksgiving Day win over the New York Jets, Tony Romo grabbed dinner with Jessica Simpson in Dallas.

Romo, 27, arrived at the Dragonfly restaurant inside the swank Hotel ZaZa at around 7 p.m. Thursday, shortly after Simpson, also 27. They settled into a corner table with about 25 friends and family.

Hairstylist-to-the-stars Ken Paves says he’s on the mend after getting bashed in the face by a paparazzi camera while trying to protect friend Jessica Simpson.

“I appreciate everyone who has expressed concern,” he said in a statement Monday. “While I did not expect a dinner out with friends would end up with me in the emergency room and nine stitches in my head, I am fine.”

Photographers descended upon Simpson, 28, and Paves when they left the L.A. hotspot Madeo over the weekend. When Paves rushed forward to help her to their car, a photographer struck him in the face with a camera, apparently by accident, sending him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

A Saturday night out turned ugly for Jessica Simpson and her best friend, hairstylist Ken Paves, when he was injured by photographers outside L.A. hotspot Madeo.

As the friends exited the restaurant, photographers swarmed the singer, 28. Paves stepped in to protect Simpson when a pap struck him in the face with a camera. An observer tells PEOPLE that the injury was an accident.

“Everyone was pushing each other to get a picture of Jessica,” a source tells PEOPLE.

A call to Paves was not returned.

Jessica Simpson stood up two dates on Tuesday night - boyfriend Tony Romo and … Elmo?

The singer - who designs clothing, shoes and handbags for Macy’s - was supposed to fly from Nashville to New York Tuesday to celebrate the department store’s 150th anniversary.

But driving rain caused serious flight delays, forcing Simpson to miss her scheduled Macy’s gig singing “Happy Birthday” with Elmo.

In fact the deparment store party - which included guests like Eva Mendes, Tommy Hilfiger and Martha Stewart - had nearly ended by the time Simpson finally arrived at 8:30 p.m.

“I’m so, so sorry!” she said as she rushed into Manhattan’s Gotham Hall with her B.F.F. hairstylist Ken Paves. “%26#91;I wish%26#93; I could be God and control the weather.”

But her injured NFL boyfriend, for one, was hoping she’d miss the event.

“Tony was just praying %26#91;that I wouldn’t make it out%26#93;,” Simpson admitted. “He had planned a really romantic date in case I didn’t make it %26#91;to New York%26#93; tonight.”

So what make’s the quarterback such a catch? “His heart!” she told PEOPLE.

Jessica Simpson says she could have never dragged her NFL star boyfriend Tony Romo shopping for engagement rings. The same can now be said for pinky rings.

Romo, a quarterback for the Cowboys, busted the little finger on his right hand Sunday in an overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Romo, 28, who throws with his right hand, will be out for four weeks.

The injury came as Simpson, 28, shot down rumors she checked out engagement rings with Romo.

“We are not engaged!” she tells Entertainment Tonight. “Tony and I have not gone to Neiman Marcus - somebody said we bought a ring there. I couldn’t drag Tony in to Neiman Marcus if I tried.”

Jessica Simpson performed for thousands of fans at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas Friday night, but made sure one man in the crowd, her boyfriend Tony Romo, was the center of attention.

“Wow, I love Dallas,” the singer told the crowd at the city’s Fair Park, just east of downtown. “Obviously, I love Dallas because I grew up here and this is my home - you guys are my family - but I did find an amazing boyfriend here in Dallas!”

Cheers erupted for the Cowboys quarterback, who smiled, looking on from the sound area. Although some fans were clearly more interested in watching him watch Simpson perform - their backs were to the stage the entire time - Romo didn’t seem to mind the attention. He grinned as Simpson, 28, called him “the calm of the storm in my life” and said, “Whatever I go through, I know I can depend on him to relax and bring me faith again.”

Nursing a broken pinky and chatting with Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, Romo bobbed his head with the music and was caught singing along to a few songs. When Simpson hit a powerful note during “Do You Know,” he clapped in awe.

The admiration was mutual. “Sometimes, to find a love as big as that, you have to go through some heartbreak, some ugly ones and some butthead ones,” Simpson told the crowd. “You go through that to really appreciate where you are in life right now.”

Speaking of “buttheads,” she said she wrote the song “Still Don’t Stop Me” about an ex. “For some reason, I kept letting some guy come into my life. I couldn’t understand it until I wrote this song and was like, ‘Jessica, you need to wake up.’”

Midway through the show, Simpson left the stage as her band was introduced. Romo, protected by police, was also escorted backstage. He returned to the sound booth when she took the stage again.

Jessica Simpson just notched her first No.-1 country album - but she also wants to give herself props having Tony Romo as the love of her life.

“Tony is a great quarterback, but he’s a better boyfriend,” Simpson, 28, told PEOPLE at a Nina’s Night Out, a benefit for the Rape Crisis Center at the Palms Casino Resort’s Pearl Theatre in Las Vegas on Thursday. “I’m seriously proud of myself for letting him into my life.”

Romo “was my Monday this week,” joked Simpson, in reference to her song about him, “You’re My Sunday,” and the Dallas Cowboys’ huge win over the Philadelphia Eagles on ESPN’s Monday Night Football a few days ago.

“Through all the chaos and torment and everything I go through, I can lay in his arms and finally rest,” she added.

Having her cuddled up next to him isn’t always such a relief, admitted Simpson.

“To be my man, you have to put up with a lot,” said the singer. “I toot under the sheets, I spend a lot of money and I can belch the ABC’s.”

On Forgetting Lyrics

During her 70-minute set featuring her album, Do You Know, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s country music chart this week, Simpson forgot the lyrics to one of her best-known pop songs, “With You.”

“I did the same thing on Good Morning America,” said an apologetic Simpson, referring to her tech-challenged TV spot before starting the song over again.

Afterwards, she said, “I’ve been singing that song for about 70 years and I forgot the lyrics. At least you guys knew them.”

Simpson continues her hectic promotional schedule, when she performs this weekend at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona, Calif.

“I’ve been to 12 states in the past week,” she said. “I’m exhausted, but it’s worth it. I can’t believe I have the No. 1 album in country right now.”
