Laura Bush had a pleasant surprise for the 150 kids gathered at Dallas’s Trinity River Audubon Center: her pals Nick, Joe and Kevin - the Jonas Brothers.
The first lady and the young heartthrobs spent Sunday promoting the First Bloom conservation program by helping students make seed balls from compost, clay, native grass seeds and water.
After Mrs. Bush donned gloves to pitch in, the brothers followed suit.
Nick, 16, needed a little help, however. After he rolled a muddy ball, he displayed it to a young girl standing next to him and asked, “Make it bigger?”
“Did y’all ever think you’d be making seed balls with the Jonas Brothers?” Mrs. Bush asked the kids, who were from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas and Williams Preparatory School.
“No!” came the quick reply. Followed by giggles.
This isn’t the first time the Jonases have spent time with the first lady; they performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll for the past two years.
“They were our stars, as you might imagine,” Mrs. Bush told PEOPLE. “The kids were just thrilled when they got there and found out that the Jonas Brothers were singing. We just got to be friends.”
Nick Jonas said of performing at the White House, “It’s been an honor every time. Definitely a dream come true.”
The Jonases have since recorded a PSA for the government’s Get Outdoors, It’s Yours! campaign.
The Bushes and Jonases will soon practically be neighbors. The president and first lady plan to live in Dallas after his term ends, and the guys recently bought a house in nearby Westlake.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Mrs. Bush said of the couple’s imminent move. “George and I lived in Dallas when he was elected governor, so it’s been 14 years since we’ve lived here. It is home.”

Nick Jonas has a new best friend: a golden retriever named Elvis.
The pup was a birthday gift from his family, according to the band’s rep. The youngest member of the Jonas Brothers band, who turned 16 on Tuesday, named the pup for two of his favorite musicians, Elvis Costello and Elvis Presley.
Though the band has been busy working on its upcoming film, Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie (which will open Feb. 22, 2009), Nick still made time for Elvis on Tuesday, taking him for a walk around his L.A. neighborhood.

The Jonas Brothers are opening up - a little bit - about their dating life after inviting fans to send questions to them.
Asked if they’d ever date a fan or non-famous people, the brothers reply on their MySpace page: “Yes, we have already dated fans or girls that are not celebrities. In fact, we really like to believe that the girl we will spend our lives with will be our biggest ‘fan.’”
As for who Kevin, Joe and Nick are dating now or who they’ve courted in the past, the guys keep mum. “It is our rule to not talk about our personal lives, especially who we are dating. The same would be true if we were dating you.”
And the Jonas Brothers promise to keep the information coming: “Keep checking in for more answers to your questions from our ASK US ANYTHING blog.”

Could you be playing video games online against the Jonas Brothers?
The teen stars have their own Xbox Live accounts - and they love to get their game on, their pal David Henrie tells PEOPLE.
“They have different gamer tags,” Henrie, who stars in Wizards of Waverly Place, said Saturday at Nintendo’s 20th anniversary celebration in New York. “People have no idea it’s them.”
So, what’s their favorite game?
Video games have become one of the best ways for the brothers to interact socially as their fame has sky-rocketed, Henrie adds.
When they go out, “they’ve got a bodyguard with them 24/7,” he says, so hanging out at home is far more appealing.
“You just go to someone’s house, and you just hang out at their house,” Henrie says. “You actually get to be with them.”

It’s official: The Jonas Brothers are now an international phenomenon.
The teen pop stars were met by more than 1,000 screaming fans Wednesday, when they headed stepped out in London for the European premiere of Camp Rock, the movie starring Joe, 19, and featuring appearances by Kevin, 20, and Nick, 15.
And on the event’s purple carpet, they brushed off Russell Brand’s controversial comments about their purity rings while hosting the MTV Video Music Awards.
“You know, we’re just trying our best every day,” Joe told reporters. “We’re just trying to make our mom proud every day.” (The brothers previously called Brand’s hosting job “hilarious.”)
Joe has been seeing country music star Taylor Swift, 18, who, only a week ago, played her first concert in the U.K.
Forgive and forget? That seems to be the Jonas Brothers’ attitude toward Russell Brand.
In England to promote their Disney movie Camp Rock, the brothers say they were not upset at the British comedian for taking swipes at their purity rings and pledges of virginity during Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards.
“For us it’s cool to see that he recognizes we are gentleman,” Nick Jonas said Tuesday during an appearance on BBC Radio’s Newsbeat program.
Plus, the teen stars say, they had an army of fans by their side.
Said Kevin: “We had a lot of friends there and everybody’s so nice. We had a good time.”
In fact, the Jonas Brothers say they’re fans of Brand’s humor. “I think he did a good job,” Nick said, offering a review of his hosting performance. “We saw him on %26#91;The Late Show With%26#93; Conan O’Brien and thought he was hilarious.”
The only critique, Kevin said of Brand’s politics-laden monologue, was that he didn’t cover enough topics.
“I think he focused on certain things and didn’t move off of them,” he said. “People’s attention spans in America need more than that.”
After the success of their TV movie Camp Rock, the Jonas Brothers are now prepping for their own Disney Channel original series.
“It’s going to be about us as a band but dealing with normal things like trying to take out the trash and not get hounded by fans,” Joe Jonas tells ELLEgirl magazine about the as-yet untitled series. “It’s going to be a funny show, and it’s going to be a great cast.”
The show - originally about the boy band living a double life as spies - has recently undergone a conceptual change. The trio, who just released their third studio album, A Little Bit Longer, told Ryan Seacrest on his KISS-FM radio show that the series will now be more like HBO’s Flight of the Conchords.
It’s more than just the show that is waiting for Joe at home in L.A. The middle Jonas, who recently received a motorcycle with a sidecar as a birthday gift, can’t wait to get back and start taking his brothers for a ride.
“The sidecar’s in Los Angeles,” he said. “When we start filming our television show, we will be setting up the sidecar.”
As for their Video Music Award nomination for video of the year, “%26#91;This%26#93; is huge for us,” said Kevin, 20. “We can’t believe it.”
The VMAs, airing Sunday on MTV, pit the Jonases against Britney Spears, Chris Brown, the Ting Tings and Pussycat Dolls.
Taylor Swift says that Joe Jonas is just a friend. But the Jonas Brothers cutie fueled all those “Are they an item?” rumors when he turned up at the country star’s concert on Sunday night.
Hiding among a group of people, Jonas, 19, arrived at the Rascal Flatts concert in the West Palm Beach Cruzan Amphitheatre five minutes before Swift, 18, took the stage.
“I spotted Joe quickly, but he was trying to hide from the crowds by tucking in-between a few people,” says Mishelle Rivera, Assistant Promotions Director for Miami’s Y-100 Radio. “He was wearing a baseball cap and real casual dress so he wouldn’t stand out.”
Rivera and her friends saw Jonas near the soundboard - next to Swift’s dad - ready to watch Taylor, who sparkled in a sleeveless turquoise sequin dress and cowboy boots, perform her number one hit, “I’m Only Me When I’m with You.”
A surprise guest at a couple recent Jonas Brothers concerts, Swift shot a cameo for the band’s upcoming 3-D movie in New York City last week.
In July, she denied to PEOPLE that she and Jonas are an item, saying of Joe and his two brothers, “We’re all friends.”
Reached by PEOPLE on Thursday, Swift said through her rep: “He’s an amazing guy and anybody would be lucky to be dating him.”
And on Aug. 5, when Ryan Seacrest asked Jonas if he was dating Swift, he replied: “She’s a great girl … I think anybody would love to go on a date with her.”
Asked whether the two are dating, Swift’s publicist said, “They are friends and she’s friends with all the Jonas Brothers.” A rep for the Jonas Brothers had no comment.

Before gearing up for the kick off of their tour Monday, the Jonas Brothers took a little time out to visit Yankee Stadium and meet some of their favorite major league players over the weekend.
“We’re freaking out!” gushed Joe Jonas to Buzznet.com. “We’re like, inches away from Derek Jeter.” Diehard baseball fans for their “whole life,” says Joe, they also shook hands with infielder favorite Robinson Cano.
Oh how the perks of their gig just keep on getting better! With their album climbing the charts, Joe says the “feel good” record is just about being, “really positive and up beat because we’ve gone through a great year. Everything has gone right for us.”
If all this wasn’t enough, the guys plan to round out the year shooting their new show. “At first it was about spies,” says Joe. “But now it’s been more constructed. It’s just going to be called Jonas and is going to be us dealing with trying to take out the trash and not get hounded by fans. It’s going to be a funny show.”
Joe Jonas celebrated his 19th birthday with a new set of wheels - a motorcycle with a sidecar - given to him by his family.
“I’m pumped!” Joe said in an interview Friday in New York with Radio Disney on-air personality Ernie D.
“Don’t worry,” adds his brother, Kevin, 20, “there were lots of helmets given.”
Joe blew out 20 candles, including one for good luck, on a strawberry shortcake birthday cake and his brothers and parents sang “Happy Birthday” to him along with the rest of radio station staff. -Sharon Cotliar
