Kate Winslet: ‘Look at Me Not Being Perfect’

Nov 14, 2008 Author: admin | Filed under: Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet: %26#39;Look at Me Not Being Perfect%26#39;

appears naked in her upcoming film The Reader. She doesn’t use a body double and disputes weight-loss claims. What’s her secret?

“My mantra is ‘keep it simple,’ ” the five-time Oscar nominee tells the U.K.’s Daily Mail in a new interview, revealing that she cooks at home and she eats anything except pasta - “it gives me a stomach ache.”

She’s also a Pilates person!

“I have a mat and little hand weights and I do a stomach thing and a bum thing. It’s very simple - you barely break into a sweat,” she says of practicing to a DVD “on the living room carpet.”

“Here’s what’s so great about it: no one’s looking at you, no one’s telling you what to do or work harder or anything like that,” says Winslet, 33. “I know it seems slightly tragic but it’s my way of exercising in a time-efficient way.”

“Nobody is perfect. I just don’t believe in perfection. But I do believe in saying, ‘This is who I am and look at me not being perfect.’ I’m proud of that.”

So what does the mother of two, whose “boobs are worse for wear,” try? “I do whatever I can just to stay healthy,” she says. “I don’t go to the gym. I mean, I go through phases where I think: ‘Oh, I really should go and do a class.’ ”

Of the Vanity Fair shoot, which sparked a flurry of digital retouching claims, the actress says she was just in character. “I feel like I was playing the part and not me - it doesn’t feel like me. It took six hours to set up the lighting and the hair and makeup, because I obviously don’t look like that all the time.”

Kate Winslet Calls 92-Year-Old Costar ‘Sexy’

Kate Winslet Calls 92-Year-Old Costar %26#39;Sexy%26#39;

Never mind that Leo guy. When it comes to hot costars, prefers a more mature man.

“Eli Wallach is my very own Sexiest Man Alive!” Winslet gushed Sunday night at a gala honoring her friend and fellow actor Wallach, 92.

“The truth is,” she told guests at Tavern on the Green in New York, which included Wallach and his longtime wife, actress Anne Jackson, “Annie, if I had been around 60 years ago, you would have had some tough competition!”

Winslet, 33, attended the 80th anniversary gala dinner for the famed New York acting school, The Neighborhood Playhouse, to give an award to former student Wallach - who auditioned for the school in 1938 and is known for starring in such classics as The Misfits, The Magnificent Seven, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

“But one of my favorites,” Winslet admitted, “is The Holiday!” in which they costarred together in 2006.

So why does the actress find the elderly star so fetching?

“He’s always smiling, always chatting, always concentrating, and always telling stories. My favorite story is one that Eli shared with me about dancing on screen with Marilyn Monroe,” said Winslet. “I made him tell me that story again and again and again.”

And, she points out, he’s got more stamina than most younger guys.

“He could go take after take after take …” she says. On set, “there were days, I must confess, when I’d worry about him getting tired. But not Eli. Oh, no, no, no. I’d say to him, ‘Eli, please, would you go home now … We’ve been here for 20 hours and it’s nearly midnight and you’ve done your close up!’ But he’d look at me, almost offended, and say, ‘Oh no … I’m not going home. Not when I’m playing with you!’ ”

Also attending the reunion dinner were former Playhouse students Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen, and Law %26 Order: Special Victim Unit’s Chris Meloni, who attended a summer session at the school when he was 23.

“I remember thinking to myself, ‘They are slowly and intentionally driving me crazy!’” said Meloni, of the school’s “repetition” acting exercise made famous by acting coach Sanford Meisner. “But I went with it. Being crazy is okay. Don’t fight crazy. You have to be a little crazy to be an actor.”

Kate Winslet ‘Furious’ Over Body Airbrush Claims

Nov 5, 2008 Author: admin | Filed under: Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet %26#39;Furious%26#39; Over Body Airbrush Claims

Just a day after revealed in a Vanity Fair interview that she still feels like the “fat kid,” critics in her home country are lining up to claim she still is.

But the svelte five-time-Oscar-nominee isn’t having it: “Kate is furious at suggestions that her body has been airbrushed,” her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The Sun ponders on its front page whether “that magic airbrush has been at work again” and the Daily Telegraph got a digital retouching expert to analyze the photos. But the closest scrutiny comes from the Daily Mail, which engaged a professional airbrush artist to perform an autopsy on Winslet, who was shot wearing heels, black stockings and nothing else.

“She is in terrific shape and what you see is how she looks or she would never have agreed to pose for those shots,” adds her rep.

“I just didn’t want people to think I was a hypocrite and that I’d suddenly lost 30 lbs. or whatever,” the youngest ever five-time Oscar nominee said at the time. “So I just came out and said, ‘Look, I don’t look like that’. I’m not mad at the magazine, but I have no intention of looking like that.”

Winslet’s rep does admit that minor tweaks were done to the actress for the photoshoot but insists the work was confined to skin shades only.

“The only retouching was the usual work on skin tone that happens in every glamour shoot,” adds the rep.

Kate Winslet: I Still Feel Like the ‘Fat Kid’

Kate Winslet: I Still Feel Like the %26#39;Fat Kid%26#39;

struggled with her weight as a teenager - and the successful star and fashion icon says she still sometimes has doubts about her body.

“I never had a desire to be famous,” Winslet, 31, says in a new Vanity Fair interview. “I was fat. I didn’t know any fat famous actresses. I just did not see myself in that world at all, and I’m being very sincere. You know, once a fat kid, always a fat kid.”

Luckily, Winslet did not let her insecurities get the best of her. In fact, she set a record as the youngest actress to earn five Oscar nominations. But despite her professional successes, Winslet tells the magazine she still can be self-critical.

“But then I think, ‘They can’t be happy in those heels,’” she says.

So, what makes Winslet happy?

“I need to be looked after,” she says. “I need someone to say to me, ‘Shall I run you a bath?’ or ‘Let’s go to the pub, just us.’ I mean, the things that make me happiest in the whole world are going on the occasional picnic, either with my children or with my partner.

The actress and her director husband Sam Mendes wed in 2003, and have a son, Joe, 5, together. Winslet has a daughter, Mia, 8, from a previous relationship.

Reuniting With Leo

Her latest project, Revolutionary Road, due in theaters in late December, allowed Winslet to collaborate with her husband for the first time. Mendes directed his wife in the period film, which also reunited her with Titanic costar .

“Leo and I, you know, are sort of kindred spirits,” Winslet says. “We’re cut from the same cloth.”

DiCaprio also has high praise for Winslet, saying, “Kate is the most talented actress of her generation.”

Winslet has already earned Oscar buzz for her role in the film. And she may double her chances a sixth nomination with her second anticipated film this fall, The Reader, due out Dec. 12.

“How the hell did I get that lucky %26#91;to have two compelling roles%26#93; in the same 12-month period?,” she says. “It’s really rare and remarkable, and I don’t take that position lightly. It might not happen like that again; I’m well aware of that. You know, the truth is, I’m just going to bloody well make the most of it.”

Kate Winslet Wins Libel Damages over Diet Claims

Jun 17, 2008 Author: admin | Filed under: Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet Wins Libel Damages over Diet Claims | Kate Winslet

has won undisclosed libel damages from a magazine that accused her of using a diet doctor.

Britain’s glossy Grazia magazine printed allegations in early February saying the five-time Oscar nominee had approached a doctor for help with her weight, despite the fact that she has previously said she will not bow to Hollywood pressure to be skinny.

“I am delighted that this matter has been resolved, and the record set straight,” Winslet said in a statement after Friday’s win. “I am not a hypocrite. I have always been, and shall continue to be, honest when it comes to body/weight issues.”

London legal reps for the mother-of-two Winslet launched libel proceedings against the magazine and on Friday won an apology, along with damages and legal costs.

In the article, headlined “Kate’s mystery visits to diet doctor,” Dr Yi Pan discussed treatments he offered celebrities at his Chinese Healing Insitute in California. Winslet, it was revealed in court, did receive treatment from Dr Pan, but for a neck injury and not for weight loss.

“%26#91;Grazia%26#93; stated %26#91;in the article%26#93;… that Kate had approached a doctor for help with her weight despite the fact that she has previously said that she will not bow to Hollywood pressure of being skinny,” her attorney, Rachel Atkins, from law firm Schillings told the court Friday. “The article suggested she had lied to the public.”

Approached by PEOPLE, reps for Grazia declined to comment on the decision, nor did they reveal the extent of damages and legal costs they must pay. Winslet has announced that the damages she receives will go to help people with eating disorders.

Grazia magazine has apologized to me in full, and admitted that their story was incorrect, which gives me tremendous peace of mind,” Winslet added in her statement. “I feel very strongly that ‘curves’ are natural, womanly and real.”

“I shall continue to hope that women are able to believe in themselves for who they are inside, and not feel under such incredible pressure to be unnaturally thin,” she said. “I am donating the ‘damages’ given to me by Grazia, to an eating disorder charity.”

Kate Winslet Threatens to Sue Over Diet Claims

is furiously denying a British magazine’s claims that she has been seeing a diet specialist in Los Angeles.

The allegations, which were printed in the glossy magazine Grazia, are “completely untrue,” Winslet told reporters on the red carpet at the BAFTA awards in London on Sunday.

“I’m going to fight for myself. I don’t want people thinking that I would ever go to a diet doctor, I would ever buy into that stuff,” Winslet, who is nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Little Children, told a BBC radio interviewer. “I never have done, I never will.”

Last week, Grazia printed a story alleging that the actress visited the Chinese Healing Institute in Santa Monica to help with neck pain, and also to lose weight.

On Monday, attorneys for the actress at Schillings law firm in London said proceedings for libel were being issued. Winslet’s rep, Sara Keene, underlined her client’s feelings, saying: “Kate is angry and upset about it because it is an issue she feels very strongly about. She will be issuing legal proceedings. She wants to get the message out there.”

Winslet, a mother of two, has become well known for not bowing to the trend for super-skinny actresses, and is often heralded as a role model for her stance.

“I will continue to say what I feel about this issue of women being thin and emaciated. It’s just out of control,” she said Sunday. “I know I’m a role model to young women. It’s a role that I take very, very seriously and I would never want anyone to ever think I was a hypocrite in doing something like going to a diet doctor, for goodness sake. I mean, it’s really, really ridiculous.”

In 2005, Winslet told PEOPLE for the annual Most Beautiful issue, “I know that I have a real woman’s figure. It’s nice that it’s acknowledged and appreciated, that I refuse to conform. I don’t starve myself.”

On Monday, Grazia issued a statement saying, “The matter is in the hands of our lawyers and not something on which Grazia wishes to comment at the moment.”
