Nicole Kidman stars opposite Hugh Jackman in her next movie, Australia. But it’s clear she has another “leading man.”
The Oscar-winner delivered a moving tribute to husband Keith Urban when she accepted a Glamour Women of the Year Award Monday night at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Kidman, dressed in a floor-length L’Wren Scott gown, told the crowd: “Three and a half years ago a man came along and said, ‘I’m going to take you to Tennessee.’ And he took me down there and he said, ‘I think you deserved to be loved. Let me love you, let me give you a home, and let’s make a baby.’ So thank you, Keith Lionel.” (Yes, that’s Urban’s middle name.)
“I don’t believe that you can %26#91;have it all%26#93;. But I believe you can have balance,” she explained. “Three and a half years ago I had a wonderful career, I had two kids, I had movie offers, great directors offering me things, but I wasn’t loved.”
“We just want everyone to sign on,” she told PEOPLE, encouraging fans to add their names to the list. “We need as many signatures as we can get before we present it to the UN on Nov. 25 so then we can go to the world and say, ‘Here, we can implement change, laws can be upheld.’ It’s to protect women and keep them safe around the world - not just in America but around the world. So please sign on.”
She adds that protecting women is the key to lasting change. “The mother is the heartbeat of the family,” she explained. “And if you take care of her, everyone does well.”
As mother to 4-month-old Sunday Rose, the actress told PEOPLE her daughter is “Good. She’s very, very easy.”
So what’s the cutest thing the baby is doing now? Kidman told reporters, “Giggling!”

Keith Urban walked into a party for his most recent No. 1 song, “You Look Good in My Shirt,” clutching the hand of his wife, Nicole Kidman.
“It’s been eight years since I was first here accepting an award for my first No. 1 song,” he told the crowd at the BMI-hosted bash in Nashville. “I’m so happy to be here again, and to be here with Nicole. This is our award.”
The country star beamed at his wife, who was casually dressed in head-to-toe black. “You do look good in my shirt,” he added with a devilish wink. “And out of it! But that’s a different story.”
Blushing and smiling, the 41-year-old Kidman took her husband’s face between her hands and sweetly kissed him on the lips.
“This song has had a strange journey. I love playing it live,” Urban said. “It doesn’t matter when it came out - a good song is a good song.”
These days, Urban is busy recording his next album, due to be released in March 2009.
The superstar couple continues to lead a quiet life in Nashville, where she takes yoga and spin classes and they stroll about the tiny village of Leiper’s Fork with daughter Sunday Rose. For Urban’s recent 41st birthday, they celebrated with friends at Germantown Cafe, a favorite casual bistro.

Perhaps it’s a case of too much baby lifting, because new dad Keith Urban has been diagnosed with a slipped disc, his publicist, Paul Freundlich, confirms to PEOPLE.
The rep wouldn’t comment on what caused the injury, but says it won’t affect the singer’s touring schedule.
Urban, 40, mentioned the setback to fans at a concert Saturday night at the Konocti Harbor Resort %26 Spa in Kelseyville, Calif., but, according to CMT.com, he went on to deliver an enthusiastic performance.
Next up is a headliner slot at this weekend’s Country Rocks Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to be followed by a Sept. 5 appearance in New York City’s Columbus Circle for the NFL’s Kickoff Show.
Sunday Rose Urban may have arrived with her parents Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban in their native Australia only last Wednesday, but already the month-old star baby is traveling in some rarefied atmosphere.
On Tuesday she got a taste of moviemaking - alongside her mom on the Sydney set of the period epic Australia.
With Sunday safely nestled in a white baby sling across her mother’s chest, Kidman - outfitted in period clothing covered by a long coat, and with her hair set in a 1930s style - took a stroll in the company of her two off-screen leading men: husband Urban and her father, Dr. Antony Kidman.
After they departed, Kidman and her immediate family - Urban and Sunday Rose - paid their own social call to the home of longtime pal Russell Crowe, at Sydney’s posh Woolloomooloo Wharf.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s newborn daughter, Sunday Rose, takes after her daddy, the actress said in a radio interview in Australia on Thursday.
“She looks like Keith,” said Kidman on the local Kyle and Jackie O Show on 2DayFM. “She’s got a little bit of hair. … It has a bit of a reddish tinge.”
The family trio arrived in Australia Wednesday night local time, marking 1-month-old Sunday’s first trip to her parents’ home country - and her first chance to meet some of her grandparents.
“My Mum was there with me for the birth but my Dad hasn’t met her and Keith’s mum and dad are coming down,” the actress said.
“Anybody out there who’s got kids knows it’s just a certain kind of feeling that you can only experience when you do it - we’re stoked,” he said.
Two weeks after the arrival of their daughter Sunday Rose, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have resumed their normal domestic routine.
But these days the pace is just a little more hectic.
What were once morning trips to the local Starbucks have now become coffee runs. Since the birth, Urban, 40, has been spotted rushing in to grab warm drinks and newspapers to go instead of sitting down at a quiet corner table to relax with his wife.
Still, the pair are getting back to business - with a twist. On Saturday, Urban played his first show as a dad in Philadelphia. Fans threw baby gifts (including a large stuffed Winnie the Pooh) onstage and waved signs welcoming Sunday Rose.
As Urban played his guitar while kneeling in front of the crowd, one concert-goer held up a pink baby gift. And Urban, unable to stop mid-solo, never missed a beat. He leaned over, still playing, and grabbed the package with his teeth. Then, he stood up and with a quick flick of his head, tossed the gift back toward the drums mid-stage.
“I have a whole new understanding of the term ‘who’s your daddy ‘ ” Urban told the crowd.
But even with a newborn at home, the on-the-go parents make a little time for rest and relaxation.
Last week they were spotted shopping at the Mattress Inn, an upscale sleep shop in Nashville. “You can definitely tell that %26#91;Keith%26#93; loves and adores %26#91;Nicole%26#93; because it was all about her,” general manager Vaughn Corder tells PEOPLE.
The couple (sans baby) also hit up Starbucks again before enjoying an afternoon movie at the local cinema.

“The birth of Nicole and Keith’s daughter is such wonderful news and a beautiful addition to our family,” Nicole’s sister, Antonia Kidman, tells PEOPLE. “We’re all absolutely thrilled with the new arrival.”
The Kidmans arrived in Nashville over the weekend from Sydney while Nicole’s father, Antony, stayed behind to watch over his other grandchildren.
Antonia, who has four children of her own, and her mother plan to remain in Nashville for the next several days.
