, who crushed his hand in a car accident, was injured yet again, this time on a movie set, PEOPLE confirms.

LaBeouf, 22, suffered a cut below his eyebrow while working on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on Tuesday. The actor received stitches on set and went immediately back to work.

LaBeouf’s hand injury had been written into the script for the Transformers sequel. There was no word on whether his latest injury would also be included in the storyline.

Reps for LaBeouf had no comment.

The on-set injury was first reported by TMZ.com.

Action star is just as tough off screen as he is on.

“I’m just propped up right now to do Transformers 2,” LaBeouf told PEOPLE of his left hand at Tuesday’s Eagle Eye premiere in Hollywood. “Then, when I get another surgery, I’ll start recovering. Right now, I’m getting through.”

It was his first red carpet appearance since the July 27 DUI citation and accident that crushed his hand. The 22-year-old kept the healing appendage, which was in a white protective guard, in his pocket for most of the night. And when asked if he was “70- to 80-percent back to normal,” LaBeouf joked, “I haven’t percentaged it out.”

“It will be a part of it,” Alex Kurtzman, Transformers 2 co-writer and Eagle Eye producer, said. “Very little, actually, very little. Without giving too much away, it actually fit very organically into what we were already doing.”

LaBeouf revealed to PEOPLE that it’s the elaborate action sequences with explosions on Eagle Eye, Transformers 2, and Indiana Jones 4 where actors stand to get injured.

“You start pushing it a little bit. The scary thing about doing it so often is you take certain things for granted,” he said. “You forget to put the elbow pad on, and you wind up wrecking your elbow … You become jaded. It’s work to not become jaded.”

Shia LaBeouf Calls Car Crash %26#39;Eye-Opening%26#39;

Calling his July 27 traffic accident “eye-opening and terrifying,” considers himself lucky to be alive.

“The car hit me at 70 m.p.h.,” the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull star, 22, tells Entertainment Tonight in his first interview since his truck flipped over on a West Hollywood street.

“It was one of the biggest things that’s happened to me, for sure, in my life,” said LaBeouf. “I’m grateful to be here.”

At the hospital, LaBeouf was cited for misdemeanor DUI because “he was showing obvious signs of intoxication from the smell of alcohol coming from his breath,” sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Wolf told PEOPLE.

However, the actor has yet to be formally charged with any crime.

In addition, LaBeouf may not be at fault for the accident, because the other driver was found to have run a red light, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Shia LaBeouf Pal: %26#39;I Have His Back%26#39; It’s been a rough summer for Indiana Jones star , who crushed his hand in a car accident resulting in his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. But don’t count him out, says a pal.

“He’s been through a lot, he’s had a hard life, and he grew up with some scars. But he’s a fighter,” says Christy Carlson Romano, who costarred with LaBeouf in the Disney TV series Even Stevens. “I have his back.”

But LaBeouf is no angel, she admits. “In fact, he’s crazy like a rock star!” she says.

“I’m not an advocate of drinking and driving,” Romano tells PEOPLE at a Samsung event Sept. 3 in New York City honoring fashion designer Valentino. “But I think that the criticism is a little overexaggerated. In Los Angeles, even if you have one drink, that counts as a DUI.”

Despite the setback, Romano doesn’t think LaBeouf’s rising star was tarnished.

“I grew up with girls like and , and I can tell star quality when I see it. He’s got it,” says the actress, who played Shia’s big sister Ren Stevens in the Disney original series and will now be joining the cast of Broadway’s Avenue Q.

She notes that LaBeouf still jokingly calls her “sis” but “he doesn’t call me up for advice!”

Attorney: Shia LaBeouf%26#39;s Hand %26#39;Crushed%26#39; in Traffic Collision

’s left hand was “crushed” in a weekend traffic accident and runs the risk of infection, the actor’s lawyer said Friday.

“The force of (the) impact immediately flipped Shia’s vehicle over, and, as a result, Shia’s left hand was crushed,” said his attorney Michael Norris in a statement.

“Shia underwent four hours of surgery on Sunday and has been recovering since then,” the statement continues. “His doctors remain hopeful that he will fully recover, but due to extensive surgery and the nature of the injuries, there remains a substantial risk of both infection and other complications.”

LaBeouf, 22, suffered the injuries when his truck collided with another vehicle in West Hollywood at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

“We have also received information that suggests that the other driver may have been traveling upwards of 50 mph, and that said driver may not have been looking forward at the time of the accident,” the lawyer says.

“We have strong evidence that the other driver ran a red light,” sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said. “The case is still under investigation.”

Shortly after the accident, LaBeouf was cited for misdemeanor DUI because “he was showing obvious signs of intoxication from the smell of alcohol coming from his breath,” sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Wolf told PEOPLE.

The actor has yet to be formally charged with any crime.

Wearing a plain white T-shirt with the left sleeve ripped off above his injured appendage, the 22-year-old took a stroll outside in Los Angeles Thursday.

Transformers 2 director Michael Bay says the film crew will find a way to work around LaBeouf’s injury, and that the young actor wasn’t drunk at the time of the accident, despite his arrest for a misdemeanor DUI.

On Tuesday, a sheriff’s spokesman said LaBeouf may not have been at fault for the crash, since the other driver apparently ran a red light.

Director: Shia Was Not Drunk During Crash

may have been arrested for DUI after Sunday’s car accident - but Transformers director Michael Bay insists the actor was not impaired.

“He was not drunk,” Bay tells Access Hollywood in an interview slated to air Friday. “He was drinking hours and hours before.”

“We had a little heart to heart the week before when he bought a brand new motorcycle,” Bay told the TV show. “I %26#91;said%26#93;, ‘Dude! You cannot ride that motorcycle! If you crash, you put 1,500 people out of work.’ He said, ‘Ok, I won’t ride it, I won’t ride it. I’ll just drive my truck.’ ”

The 22-year-old actor was behind the wheel of that truck early Sunday morning, when it reportedly flipped over following a collision with another car. (Police have said he may not be responsible for the accident.)

LaBeouf was taken to the hospital for extensive hand surgery. (His passenger, Transformers costar Isabel Lucas, was not seriously injured.)

“%26#91;Shia’s%26#93; two fingers are pretty mashed, but we’re figuring out a way to shoot around it, kind of write it in the story,” Bay says.

In the meantime, the director is unwavering in his support for the Indiana Jones star.

“The kid really has his head together,” he says. “He’s doing a great job on this movie. He’s really matured since the last one and I love working with him.”
