Robert Redford ‘Beyond Words’ over Newman’s Death

Oct 1, 2008 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Robert Redford %26#39;Beyond Words%26#39; over Newman’s Death | Paul Newman, Robert Redford Paul Newman’s lasting impact in Hollywood was more than evident Saturday, a day after the Oscar winner succumbed to cancer, as stars and pals alike expressed their sadness over his death.

“There is a point where feelings go beyond words,” two-time costar Robert Redford said in a statement. “I have lost a real friend. My life - and this country - is better for his being in it.”

The pair, who shared heartthrob status in their heyday, starred together in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and again in The Sting, in 1973. A testament to their easygoing friendship: Redford famously gave Newman a dented, engine-less Porsche as a joke for his birthday one year. Newman repaid the favor by having the car crushed and sent back to the actor.

Martin Scorsese, who directed Newman in The Color of Money - for which he won the Best Actor Oscar in 1987 - paid tribute to Newman’s big screen legacy. “It’s a great loss, in so many ways,” said Scorcese in a statement. “The history of movies without Paul Newman? It’s unthinkable. His presence, his beauty, his physical eloquence, the emotional complexity he could conjure up and transmit through his acting in so many movies - where would we be without him?”

The director called Newman’s characters “lasting and durable” and praised his effortless talent. “His powerful eloquence, his consummate sense of craft, so consummate that you didn’t see any sense of effort up there on the screen, set a new standard.”

, a fellow humanitarian (and heartthrob), never worked with Newman onscreen, but saluted the actor’s impact on the world: “He set the bar too high for the rest of us - not just actors, but all of us. He will be greatly missed.”

Costar: Charlie Sheen Will Be Great Dad to a Boy

Holland Taylor may only play Charlie Sheen’s mother on Two and a Half Men, but she sounds awfully maternal when it comes to his real-life situation - Sheen and wife Brooke are expecting a baby.

“I’m very proud of him,” the actress - who, like her costars Sheen and Jon Cryer, is up for an Emmy for her role on the CBS sitcom - told PEOPLE at Friday’s Academy of Television %26 Sciences party for the nominees.

“I think he’s really enjoying fatherhood,” says Taylor, “and it’s really deepened his life and his commitment to life.”

Asked how she thinks Sheen would fare with a baby boy, Holland says, “That would be a trip! I mean, I think he’s a wonderful daddy to his girls - he just adores them, he’s very sweet with them. %26#91;But%26#93; it will be very interesting to see Charlie with a boy. It’ll bring out a whole other side of him, I’m sure.”

’s an Old Pal

As for Taylor’s longtime friend , when it’s suggested she might help find him a woman to settle down with, Taylor replies, “I think he can have any girl he wants, no problems there.”

And she has nothing but compliments to bestow upon George, with whom she appeared briefly but memorably (as Michelle Pfeiffer’s urbane mother) in the 1996 romantic comedy, One Fine Day.

“I have known Clooney from a long time ago,” says Taylor. “He’s a very loyal friend. He never forgets anybody - we might have worked together yesterday, if we considered his tone %26#91;with me%26#93;. He’s just a very friendly, sweet guy.”

Val Kilmer Considering New Mexico Governor Run? | Val Kilmer He is voice of the car Kitt in the new Knight Rider series, but could Val Kilmer’s next role be the voice of New Mexico?

Former presidential candidate and current New Mexico governor Bill Richardson has been fueling speculation that the Batman Forever star may replace him as governor of the 47th state in 2010.

“I like the idea,” Richardson told reporters on Thursday. “Val Kilmer is a New Mexican, he was Batman. You know there have been successful actors going into politics.”

Earlier this year, Kilmer got the rumor mill turning when he hinted that he’d consider a run for office.

A native of Los Angeles, Kilmer has for many years lived on a sprawling ranch outside of Pecos, where he raises bison. He is actively involved in The Wildlife Center of New Mexico.

While is known for his political causes, if Kilmer were elected, he would be the first Batman to achieve elected office - at least in the real world.

On TV’s animated Family Guy series, Adam West, who played the Caped Crusader on the popular TV show, has been the animated mayor of the fictional Rhode Island hamlet of Quahog.

George Clooney to Host Barack Obama Fundraiser in Geneva

| Barack Obama, George Clooney Fresh from the Venice Film Festival, will appear Tuesday evening at a Barack Obama fundraiser in Geneva.

According to reports from Swiss news agency ATS, the Burn After Reading star and longtime Obama supporter hopes to increase Democratic coffers by nearly $1 million at the event, held for U.S. citizens living overseas.

According to planners, Clooney will address a cocktail reception - speaking and answering questions - of 170 U.S. citizens, who are each paying $1,000.

Hoping to score tickets? The twin events are already sold out, Adams, who also serves on Obama’s National Finance Committee, told journalists.

Clooney has known Obama personally since 2004 and campaigned for him during his Ilinois Senate run. But the actor had previously begged off campaigning for Obama during his Presidential bid, explaining to reporters that he wouldn’t want to “damage” him.

The fundraiser will be Clooney’s only active personal participation in the campaign, Adams told Geneve newspaper Le Temps. Said Adams, “I personally assured that Geneva is a city where restraint is the norm and that he wouldn’t be assaulted by fans trying to tear the shirt off him.”

The actor will be bringing “three or four people” with him to the fundraiser, Adams said.
