The romance between and is soooo “right,” a friend of the couple tells PEOPLE.

“I dig Jake and Reese together,” says Clifton Collins Jr., an old pal of Witherspoon, 32, and Gyllenhaal’s costar in the upcoming film Brothers. “They seem happy.”

Gyllenhaal, 27, seems a great match for her, he says. “He’s got this big, lovable heart. He’s just like that.”

So would Gyllenhaal make a good dad?

You betcha, he adds. In fact, “He’s a big kid. And he’s very playful.” Indeed, Gyllenhaal has had a lot of practice: He’s uncle to 22-month-old Ramona, his sister ’s child with Peter Saarsgaard, and has been spending lots of time with Witherspoon and her kids, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4.

Watching Gyllenhaal and Witherspoon together, “I see smiles, so something’s gotta be %26#91;going%26#93; right,” Collins Jr. says.

A posthumous Oscar for for his Joker performance?

“I would vote for him,” his Dark Knight cstar told reporters Monday at the film’s London premiere.

Gyllenhaal, 30, said of Ledger’s Oscar prospects that the “degree of difficulty should be incorporated into the award.”

“To be that incredible in a movie that’s this huge, that’s about so many things, is really an accomplishment,” she said. “In a way I feel funny thinking about the Oscars when he isn’t alive, but at the same time I’m a member of the Academy and I would vote for him.”

She said of Ledger’s performance: “In order to be a good actor you have to find a place where you are free, but it’s very unusual to be absolutely free in the way that he was in this movie It was inspiring working with him.”

At the premiere - which featured a 2.5 ton replica of the Batmobile, shooting flames - fans carried signs and banners campaigning for an Oscar for Ledger.

Michael Caine, who plays Batman’s butler Alfred, told reporters he “would pay good money” to see a performance that could top Ledger’s for the Oscar. Previously Caine said Ledger was worthy of nomination.

PEOPLE Review: No Joke – Heath Ledger Makes The Dark Knight Unforgettable

PEOPLE Review: Heath Makes Dark Knight Unforgettable

Step aside, Spider-Man 2 and Superman II: The phenomenal The Dark Knight now reigns as the greatest superhero film of all time. From its exhilarating first frame to its bittersweet last, it sets a new standard for the genre - and redefines what a summer popcorn movie can be.

After starting to clean up corrupt Gotham City by becoming the caped crusader in 2005’s Batman Begins, billionaire Bruce Wayne (a superb Christian Bale) has the city’s bad guys on their heels. He’s joined in the fight against crime by the equally committed district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) - fated to fall from grace and become the ghastly Two-Face - who is romancing Wayne’s old flame Rachel (, a spry upgrade over Batman Begins).

While Bale again astounds, The Dark Knight’s real star is the late Ledger. Many thought that Jack Nicholson’s turn as the Joker in 1989’s Batman would never be topped, but Ledger manages to do just that.

His angrily applied white makeup accentuates the hideously creepy scars carved into his cheeks. And while Nicholson was a merry, scary jokester, frying a foe with an electrified joy buzzer, Ledger’s gags, like making a pencil “disappear” into a victim’s skull, are even darker. His haunting Joker helps make The Dark Knight unforgettable.

The Dark Knight (PG-13) opens Friday.

And Maggie should know. Her daughter, Ramona, turns 2 in October.

with a child,” she tells the magazine, out July 15. “%26#91;When Ramona was first born%26#93;, I didn’t know what I was doing.”

The actress, who recently said she thinks harder about accepting movie roles since becoming a mom, adds there are some down sides to all the attention she’s getting from being in a high-profile movie like The Dark Knight - such a being called out for fashion so-called faux pas.

“Sometimes it freaks me out. I’ve been so hurt and felt so bad,” she says of making celeb “worst dressed” lists.

Still, she is able to let some of it roll of her, adding, “People will always say mean things about you if you put yourself out there.”

is cool with onscreen nudity - so long as she’s the one in the buff and not her actor-fiancé, Peter Sarsgaard.

“I hate it when Peter does a love scene,” the actress, 30, admits in the August issue of Britain’s Tatler. “He’s very understanding - it doesn’t seem to bother him %26#91;when I do one%26#93;.”

She’d like to keep it that way. “I’d hate it %26#91;if he was doing it%26#93;,” she says. “I’d put up with it, I’d understand, but I wouldn’t like it.”

“After Secretary, people knew that I’d get naked, but I won’t get naked for anything - only if it makes sense,” she says.

Obviously happy in her own skin, the actress went on to act out steamy love scenes in Sherrybaby and even posed up for the British-based lingerie designer, Agent Provocateur, just six months after giving birth to her and Sarsgaard’s daughter Ramona, born October 2006.

Loves Role as Mom

And the actress, soon to be seen as Batman’s love interest in the much-anticipated The Dark Knight, couldn’t be happier in her real-life role as Ramona’s mom.

“Motherhood is incredible,” gushes the actress. “It’s brought me to my knees in an incredible way - it’s so humbling.”

And are the engaged, Brooklyn-based couple, soon to be walking down the aisle? “At some point in the next 20,” she responds casually.

says motherhood made her a better actress, but now she wants to spend more time at home than in front of the cameras.

“I think having a child changes everything and has deepened everything in my life,” Gyllenhaal, mom to 20-month-old daughter Ramona, told reporters recently. “I think it has deepened my acting.”

Of motherhood, “It really does crack you open in every way,” said the actress. “I never knew that I could be so tired. I never knew that I could work so hard. I never knew that I could love so much or be so patient or be so excited by the tiniest, tiniest little thing. Everything about it has surprised me.”

In the film, she plays Rachel Dawes, Batman’s love interest, taking over the role from , who played the part in the previous film.

“I do think that it’s really difficult to get me away from %26#91;Ramona%26#93;,” she said. “It’s difficult to find a script that’s good enough for me to think, ‘Okay, I really need to do this instead of being with my daughter.’”

Known for her edgy performances, Gyllenhaal filmed Farlanders for director Sam Mendes last spring, “but mostly I’ve been with her,” she says. “Some people have asked me whether I’ll choose things that … have a more sort of child-appropriate content, and I don’t think so. I think I’ll choose what’s interesting to me.”

Gyllenhaal says she receives tremendous support balancing parenthood and career from fiancé, Peter Sarsgaard. “We share absolutely equally,” she explained, and added that her brother is “a great uncle.”
