The former uncle Teri Hatcher helped put in prison has died of colon cancer at 70, six years after being sentenced to 14 years behind bars for molesting two young girls, one of whom committed suicide, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
There has been no comment from Hatcher.
In 2006, the Desperate Housewives star went public with the revelation that Richard Hayes Stone - the then-husband of her mother’s sister - molested her in the late 1960s and early ’70s, when she was no more than 7.
“That’s a victim thing; you ask yourself, ‘Am I just crazy? Did I make all this up?’ Somehow it might be easier to accept that you’re crazy and made it all up than to admit that it happened, and how awful it was,” Hatcher, now 43, told Vanity Fair in 2006.
Like others, Hatcher had read newspaper accounts in 2002 about northern California teen Sarah Van Cleemput, who before shooting herself left behind a note saying, “You’re probably thinking a normal teenager doesn’t do this; well, ask Dick!”
Prosecutors linked “Dick” in the note to Stone, a former engineer at National Semiconductor and a close friend of Sarah Van Cleemput’s family.
After much self-debate, including what this might do to her (then-stalled) career, Hatcher decided to contact authorities and provide further evidence of Stone’s criminal past. “At the end of the day, there was no way I was not going to put this girl first, before whatever damage might be done to me,” she said afterwards.
“When we went to interview her, she almost canceled,” Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Chuck Gillingham told the Mercury News in 2006. “But she had been with her daughter that morning and was thinking if, God forbid, something happened to her daughter that someone would come forward and do the right thing.”
Once Hatcher’s interview transcript was entered into evidence, Stone pleaded guilty and received his sentence.

Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher has revealed that she was sexually abused by an uncle - something that has haunted the actress for 35 years.
In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Hatcher describes how she carried her horrible secret with her until the 2002 suicide of a 14-year-old girl who also was molested by the uncle, Richard Hayes Stone, Reuters reports.
Afraid that her uncle might avoid prosecution, Hatcher recounts how she found out about the case in newspaper stories and was “blown over by this girl’s pain,” the actress said. “I thought, ‘Boy, that’s really close to being me.’”
Santa Clara, Calif., Deputy District Attorney Chuck Gillingham says it was Hatcher’s testimony that eventually led to a guilty plea from Stone and a 14-year prison sentence.
“Without Teri, this case would have been dismissed,” Gillingham tells Vanity Fair.
Hatcher said that she kept the abuse, which took place when she was 5, a secret from everyone, including her parents. She last saw Stone when she was 8 or 9 years old.
“That’s a victim thing; you ask yourself, ‘Am I just crazy? Did I make all this up?’ Somehow it might be easier to accept that you’re crazy and made it all up than to admit that it happened, and how awful it was,” she said.
Hatcher never discussed her involvement in the case, even after Stone’s sentencing, nor does she discuss it in her upcoming memoir, Burned Toast.
But Hatcher says she’s been haunted by the abuse her entire life and she finally realized it would be better to get it out in the open.
“I’m 41 years old, and it’s time for me to stop hiding,” she said.
A day after they married in a low-key civil ceremony in a Paris City Hall, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker have done it again - this time in a church.
The Desperate Housewives actress and the basketball star married Saturday in front of about 250 guests in a religious ceremony at the historic Church of Saint Germain l’Auxerrois, located in the 1st Arrondissement opposite the Louvre museum.
Longoria wore a couture Angel Sanchez mermaid gown made of silk wool, with silk gazar metallic embroidery, a scoop back and a long train. (See a sketch below.)
Teri Hatcher waved to the throng of photographers as she entered the church, which was decorated with 1,000 flowers for the ceremony officiated by Father Dominic Schubert.
Other guests ducked behind a large screen placed to shield them from the press. Their cellphones and cameras were sealed in plastic bags before they entered the church.
After the ceremony, the couple and their celebrity guests headed for a reception at the Chateau of Vaux le Vicomte, a 17th century castle outside Paris.
Earlier, Sheryl Crow, Jessica Alba and Longoria’s Desperate Housewives co-stars Nicollette Sheridan and Felicity Huffman - with husband William H. Macy - were all spotted at the tony Park Hyatt Paris, along with Mario Lopez and Ryan Seacrest. Sheridan was seen carrying a Christian Louboutin shopping bag into the hotel.
French-raised Parker, 25, a point guard for the San Antonio Spurs, and Longoria, 32, got engaged last November. After two wedding ceremonies, they are now not short on presents. Gifts from guests included personalized Oceanaut watches ($2,895 and $3,295) engraved with “Eva %26 Tony 07-07-07.” And another friend bought the two Fendi Casa travel pillows ($200 each) for the long flight back.
Longoria’s bridesmaids received Rafe Swarovski snakeskin clutches ($395) to match their dresses. Female guests also got a custom shade of L’Oreal Paris lipstick called Pink Romance.
Saturday’s celebrations capped off a week of partying, shopping and socializing - including a his-and-her bachelor parties in St. Tropez. Many of the guests are staying in the same hotel as the couple, who have an $11,000-a-night suite at the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome.

Thursday’s Caught in the Act >
A Los Angeles judge threw a big kiss to Teri Hatcher on Monday, ruling that a skincare line company’s lawsuit against the star should be settled in arbitration and not in a court of law.
In its Superior Court lawsuit filed in December, Hydroderm accused the actress, 43, of breaching their 2005 “exclusive endorsement deal” by endorsing rival City Cosmetics.
The Desperate Housewives star even posed for pictures applying CityLips pout plumper (a direct competitor to Hydroderm’s Volumizing Lip Serum), the $2.8 million suit alleged.
Hatcher responded to the claim by insisting she has “done absolutely nothing wrong.”
In her ruling Monday, Judge Helen I. Bendix said that both Hatcher and Hydroderm are bound by a prior agreement to arbitrate all of the company’s claims rather than litigate them in court, the Associated Press reports.
Hatcher’s attorney Alan Wertheimer has labeled the suit an “unjustified and public assault on Teri Hatcher’s good name, reputation and celebrity.”
Teri Hatcher has “done absolutely nothing wrong” in her endorsement deal with skin-care company Hydroderm, she contends in a legal response filed Thursday to a $2.8 million lawsuit.
“Contrary to the wild and unsupportable allegations of %26#91;Hydroderm%26#93;, Ms. Hatcher has not entered into agreements with any other cosmetic or skincare
companies,” the papers say.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Helen Bendix sided with Hatcher on
Thursday, denying Hydroderm early access to the Desperate Housewives star’s business records.
The cosmetics maker alleges Hatcher lent her name to at least 17 other beauty-care products while under contract with Hydroderm.
The actress argues that Hydroderm has recently gone through two ownership and management changes, and “failed to move the endorsement program forward due to its own corporate paralysis.”
Has Teri Hatcher been paying lip service to competing cosmetic companies?
According to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the 42-year-old actress signed an “exclusive endorsement deal” with Hydroderm in 2005 - only to sing the praises of City Cosmetics.
“Hatcher’s name, image and likeness have been linked to so many competitors’ products (at least 17!) that it is anyone’s guess as to what product keeps her skin and lips youthful,” said the lawsuit.
The company is demanding a complete refund of the $2.4 million endorsement deal, plus $400,000 in expenses, all “due immediately.”
In a statement, Hatcher’s legal representative called the allegations an “unjustified and public assault on Teri Hatcher’s good name, reputation and celebrity.”
In addition to labeling the claims “totally false,” the statement continued: “Ms. Hatcher will respond swiftly and decisively by appropriate legal means to recover everything she is owed under her contract, as well as compensatory and punitive damages for Hydroderm’s outrageous accusations.”
“I might do a lot of things if the money gets higher. No kissing until final payment! But it will be worth your while.”
